Our Town Winnetka Thoughts on the Town Hall / WCC

Congratulations to Peter Eck. Being the chair of WCC is a thankless job, yet this year's path was faced with some extraordinary challenges. We appreciate your service.

Both a win and a loss for technology. Kudos for the inclusion of online participation and voting. WCC met the needs of many busy families and those who were not able to be at Skokie School. That said, the technology itself for the Zoom was unprofessional given the magnitude of all the work put forth by the Council.

Participation was a winner. Over the last several weeks, more Winnetkans have engaged in the WCC process and have added their voices. We hope this trend continues as we head into the WCC 2025 cycle.

Need for more serious debate of key issues. Last night's Q&A began to surface many of the key issues that the community wishes to see leadership address: Getting Elder Beach Open, Homeowner Property Rights, etc. That said, a 20-second question with a two-minute response is not sufficient to find sensible pathways forward. Greater cooperation between boards -- e.g., Parks and Village Council -- are needed to solve for the community.

Positive steps for information, transparency, and truth. Community members seeking to learn about the WCC and the WCC process are beginning to learn the truth about where their survey results go, how candidates are slated, and platforms are developed. That is a good outcome of WCC education and broader community engagement.

Next Steps

  • November 18th -- filing date for any Winnetka resident to submit signatures and documents to file for inclusion to the Spring Primary
  • WCC Executive Committee Transition to 2025 / Leadership
  • April 1 -- Spring Primary
  • Spring WCC Town Hall
